Thom Browne oxford shirt The life of The parTy Designer Ken Fulk—whose new monograph is being released next year—keeps a busy schedule creating event spaces for the most discerning of clients, interiors for hotels and residences from San francisco to New york and a new collection of furniture for pottery Barn. here, he shares what keeps him grounded—no matter where he's traveling to. BY RIMA SUQI 32 ultratravel Style Setter EARLIEST TRAVEL MEMORY? The smell of the creosote that was used on the boardwalks at the beach. It's an odd smell. But I have such a fond memory of it. It's up there with freshly cut grass and watermelon. RECENT TRAVEL DISCOVERIES? JetBlue Mint. It's amazing. You have your own compartment. It's the best cross-country travel experience (other than private) in the U.S. by far. RECENT PERFECT HOLIDAY? Four nights at Badrutt's Palace in St. Moritz—a gift to celebrate a friend's birthday. A RECENT MEAL YOU LOVED? Dinner at Ceraldi on the harbor in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. A set menu of the freshest, most simple ingredients, beautifully crafted by the incredibly talented Michael Ceraldi. A perfect evening on Cape Cod. FAVORITE VIEW IS FROM... My bed at our ranch, Durham Ranch, in St. Helena. BEST HOTEL BAR AND FAVORITE TIPPLE THERE? The Fumoir bar at Claridge's. My drink of choice is a reposado margarita—extra cold— served up in a beautiful, vintage coupe. BEACHES YOU PARTICULARLY LOVE? Longnook Beach in Truro, Massachusetts, and Saline Beach in St. Barths. CITIES YOU PARTICULARLY LOVE? San Francisco, New Orleans, New York, Rome, Mumbai. SPOTS YOU NEVER GROW TIRED OF? Paris is my sexy mistress that I sneak away to every chance I get. PLACES THAT INSPIRE YOU? India, Morocco, Japan and Provincetown. PREFERRED LUGGAGE? I carry a big, vintage Louis Vuitton duffle that doubles as a backpack. I never check luggage— it slows you down and is bound to get lost at some point. Despite being a clotheshorse, I'm a very savvy and strategic packer. TRAVEL UNIFORM? A cashmere cardigan to keep me warm, Ralph Lauren khakis and a Thom Browne oxford shirt. FITNESS REGIMEN ON THE ROAD? I'm old- fashioned. I do calisthenics in my room or outside whenever I can: pushups, sit-ups, lunges—the works. FAVORITE SOUVENIR FROM A TRIP? These incredible knock-off slippers from a souk in Marrakesh. They have the emblems from all the luxury brands that certainly don't make any such thing. They are marvelous. Everyone asks where I got them. Next trip, I'm bringing back dozens as gifts! Designer Ken Fulk collaborated with Pottery Barn on a home collection including the Luggage Bedside Table, at right When pressed, Ken Fulk describes himself as the "Creative Director of Ken Fulk Inc., a multidisciplinary firm specializing in design, architecture, events, branding and graphics." But if you've ever been around him, you soon realize that the Virginia native's true skill is being the life of the party, whether he's designed that party or not—and he's done quite a few, including Sean Parker and Alexandra Lenas' Tolkien-esque wedding. The design darling of San Francisco's glitterati has quite a bit on deck at the moment—in addition to launching his first-ever product line, The Ken Fulk Collection, with Pottery Barn this summer, he is remodeling the Mark Hopkins Hotel on San Francisco's Nob Hill and a residential tower in New York's Hudson Yards. He'll also be releasing a monograph next fall. The key to his success? "Say yes. It's empowering and a bit scary to say yes to things you don't quite know how you might accomplish," he says, "but it keeps you young." The Greenwich penthouse at the Greenwich Hotel Bar Marmont at Chateau Marmont PHOTO BY NIKOLAS KOENIG (CHATEAUX MARMONT); COURTESY OF POTTERY BARN; CUTLER & GROSS; GREENWICH HOTEL; THOM BROWNE PLACES YOU ARE DYING TO VISIT? St. Petersburg, Myanmar, Norway. HOTEL THAT IS YOUR HOME AWAY FROM HOME? Chateau Marmont. I like to pretend I'm an old Hollywood star holed up in my suite with a vast terrace overlooking Los Angeles. My dogs can swim in the pool and dine with me in the lobby. Some of your favorite hotels? Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur, The Beaumont Hotel in London, The Greenwich Hotel in New York and Hôtel Costes in Paris. ITEMS ALWAYS IN YOUR SUITCASE? Cutler and Gross aviators, Shiseido Eye Mask, a fresh-pressed shirt, extra pair of cufflinks and Leather Oud by Dior.
